How to Choose the Best Kids Hat for Outdoor Play

Kids don't need much to turn an ordinary afternoon into an adventure.

A pile of leaves becomes something to jump into. A creek becomes a place to spend three hours. A short trail turns into a hunt for rocks, feathers, animal tracks, and whatever else happens to catch their attention.

And if they're going to spend more time outside, a good hat is one of those simple things that's worth keeping by the door.

But choosing a kids hat isn't quite the same as choosing one for an adult. Fit matters. Comfort matters. And most importantly, kids actually have to want to wear it.

Here's what we think parents should look for when choosing a hat for kids who spend their days outside.

1. Start With the Right Fit

A great kids hat isn't much use if it's constantly falling over their eyes or feels too tight after ten minutes.

That's why we recommend starting with your child's actual head measurement rather than choosing a hat based only on age.

Wild & Free hats come in two adjustable sizes:

TOTS: 19–21 inches
Approximately 12 months–4 years

RASCALS: 20.5–22.5 inches
Approximately 5–10 years

Because every kid grows differently, those age ranges are only a guide.

2. Look for an Adjustable Hat

Kids grow fast.

An adjustable hat gives you much more flexibility than a fixed-size hat and makes it easier to get a comfortable fit now while leaving some room to grow.

That's one reason we're big fans of snapbacks for kids.

An adjustable closure also comes in handy when a hat gets passed between siblings, gets worn with different hairstyles, or somehow ends up belonging to whichever kid grabbed it first on the way out the door.

Our collection of Kids Snapback Hats is designed specifically with smaller heads in mind rather than simply shrinking down an adult hat.

3. Choose Something They'll Actually Wear

This one gets overlooked.

You can buy the most technically perfect kids hat in the world, but it doesn't do much good sitting in the back seat of the car.

Let kids have some ownership over what they wear.

Maybe they love mountains. Maybe they want a bright color. Maybe they're obsessed with camping. Maybe anything involving the beach immediately wins.

A hat they choose themselves has a much better chance of making it onto their head before they run out the door.

For mountain-loving kids, Steamboat brings a vintage outdoor feel with its mountain-and-sun embroidery.

For everyday adventures, Keystone is one of our original Wild & Free styles.

And for kids who would choose the beach over just about anywhere else, Baja was made with sunny days in mind.

4. Think About Where They'll Wear It

There isn't one perfect hat for every adventure.

Think about what your family actually does outside.

If weekends usually mean trails, campgrounds, and National Parks, look for an easy-to-wear hat that's comfortable enough for hours of exploring.

If most of your outdoor time happens at beaches, lakes, parks, or playgrounds, you'll probably want something lightweight and easy to throw into a backpack or beach bag.

For everyday wear, versatility matters most. A good outdoor hat should be able to go from the playground to a weekend camping trip without much thought.

If hiking is a big part of your family's outdoor time, we've put together a separate guide explaining What to Look for in a Kids Hiking Hat.

5. Don't Forget About the Brim

A brim isn't just part of the style.

It provides useful shade for a child's face when they're playing outside.

For long days outdoors, hats should be only one part of your family's sun-protection routine. Shade, appropriate clothing, sunscreen, and taking breaks from intense sun all matter too.

The goal isn't to keep kids perfectly clean and protected from every element.

It's simply to make spending more time outside a little easier.

6. Comfort Beats Perfection

Kids run.

They sweat.

They climb things they probably weren't supposed to climb.

They drop their hats in the dirt, shove them into backpacks, leave them on picnic tables, and occasionally come home looking completely different than they did when they left.

We think that's exactly how an outdoor kids hat should be used.

Look for something comfortable enough that they forget they're wearing it and durable enough that you don't have to worry about every speck of dirt.

Adventure gear for kids should be made to participate in childhood—not get protected from it.

7. Pick a Hat That Fits Your Kind of Adventure

Some families spend weekends hiking mountains.

Others spend them at soccer fields, beaches, campgrounds, neighborhood parks, or exploring whatever happens to be nearby.

It all counts.

You don't need an epic destination to get kids outside.

Sometimes adventure is walking down a trail you've passed a hundred times and letting your child decide which direction to go.

Sometimes it's collecting leaves in the backyard.

Sometimes it's staying at the creek much longer than you planned.

And sometimes it's simply choosing outside instead of inside for the afternoon.

The Best Kids Hat Is the One That Goes on Adventures

When choosing a kids hat for outdoor play, focus on a few things:

Fit. Comfort. Adjustability. Shade. And whether your child actually likes wearing it.

Everything else is secondary.

At Wild & Free, we make Kids Snapback Hats for toddlers and kids who would rather be exploring—whether that means hiking a trail, setting up camp, spending the day at the beach, or getting really, really muddy in the backyard.

Because childhood doesn't need to be perfectly planned.

Sometimes you just have to go outside and see what happens.

Adventure starts here.
